Press Conference with Dr. Rodriguez

University Professor Dr. Roberto Rodriguez Calls on Elected Officials to Condemn Death Threats Regarding the Mexican American Studies Program in TUSD

On Thursday, August 2nd, Dr. Roberto Rodriguez and local elected officials held a press conference regarding unprosecuted death threats made in response to community activism surrounding the Mexican American Studies program in TUSD. The press conference was held at TUSD headquarters, 1010 E. 10th street at 10 a.m.

The press conference was  called in light of the impending trial of an individual that made several threats against Dr. Rodriguez in 2011. His trial will begin next week, on August 7th.

T.U.S.D. Board Meeting (Community Festival)

Another Board Meeting.  Stegeman brought up his motion to unban some books.  It didn’t make sense. Just some dumb political move. Nothing happened, no books were unbanned.

The community came out and had their voice heard. There was a beautiful sunset. We will continue fighting.  It’s only a matter of time before they fall.

T.U.S.D. Board Meeting (vote on appeal)

Today the board voted on whether to appeal Huppenthal’s decision about the MAS classes.  It was the last chance for the board to redeem itself.  Did it? No, of course not.  Adelita Grijalva said some stirring words in defense of MAS, the rest of the board said a bunch of bullshit.  The board voted to not appeal the decision.  There will be no more classes come August.

When the decision came, I was already outside and people got pissed.  All of the extra fences set up to ‘protect’ the board from the community began to come down. A lot of chanting ensued.  The police force acted in a much different manner than in May of last year when all the riot cops resorted to police brutality.  Don’t get me wrong, there still was an unnecessary amount of security but this time, they just stood by and watched while the crowd became emotional.

Needless to say, this is not over.  It can’t be. The fight will continue.
